When I first photographed Mark Phariss and Vic Holmes at their home in Plano, before the first hearing for their suit against Texas for the right to marry in early 2014, I told them I wanted to photograph their wedding. None of us thought they would be able to get married in Texas this soon.

Leading up to the wedding, the couple of 17 years took lessons at the Arthur Murray Dance Studio in Plano for several months in preparation for their first dance. Mark and Vic decided to practice their dance the night before their wedding in the ballroom after their rehearsal dinner, and I asked to photograph it.

Being able to witness and document the behind-the-scenes moments that are so special in people’s lives is one of the things I love most about being a photojournalist. Documenting historic moments, like the culmination of the fight for the right to marry, is another reason I’m a newspaper photographer.
